How times have changed! Montana Tool was founded 46 years ago, by the Wilcox brothers, who opened the doors to their business as a supply house for the area sawmills. Ten years later Montana Tool was purchased by Kent Mahler, who, seeing sawmills beginning to close down, changed the direction of the store to be a supplier to woodworkers and contractors in western Montana.

In 2010, the business was purchased by Steve and Bernita Taft, who run Montana Tool today.

Steve and Bernita are both products of a North Dakota upbringing - where prairies are filled with golden wheat, yellow canola, and tall sunflowers, but where trees are few and far between. And those that survive do so despite harsh winters, hot summers, and the never-ceasing wind gusts. So how does a North Dakota boy find a calling in woodworking?

It all began in Mr. Thurman's' 7th grade shop class and the construction of a somewhat lopsided birdhouse where Steve's passion for woodworking began. As a voracious reader and an avid learner, Steve began studying all he could about every type of wood, construction, and finishes, even as his career in the world of computer technology took off and his love affair with bluegrass music grew, eventually becoming one of the foremost banjo pickers in the northwest. And all along the way, Steve was creating beautiful wood furniture. At Montana Tool, Steve handles the product selection, having broadened the selection of woodworking machinery, tools, and shop essentials, and Bernita, with a background in accounting, takes care of office side of the business.

For Steve, everything is about quality. If you are looking for a quality tool you can use today and in the years to come, Montana Tool is the place for you. You may hear Steve say, "Life is too short for cheap tools." He will not sell any tools he would not buy for himself. Now that's an endorsement for company that offers only quality merchandise, staffed by quality people, delivered in a quality manner. And that is why today Montana Tool is considered the foremost woodworking and contractor tools supplier in western Montana, with clients coming from all over the U.S. and Canada seeking high quality products and expert advice on tool selection for every job.
